Random thoughts

I majored in PR and Advertising and those are now the areas I am the worst in, in my life. I canNOT market myself or y'know - the equivalent of it. I am the worst of the lot when it comes to sounding out just what are the cool things you're upto and how. PR - forget it. I have the best PR with the walls in my house bcos they dont market themselves or slot me/categorise me or judge me. LOL. I was at the playground with moms yesterday and I felt like someone else making inane conversation and all the right noises. I know at the back of my mind, this is probably how the world works at one level but it just bugs me. Maybe Im just idiotic.
I just wanna go home.

I realised one of the reasons God intended for us to have kids is its the best way to make sure you learn not to take love for granted. Which other relationship has you putting your bloody goddamn everything into it and then some? Only to have the objects of your affection lap it up like its their birthright and then fly away to everything else the world has to offer? Im talking about wanting their love, not the other way round.

As Nosh and Reh grow, their different personalities are a constant source of puzzlement, delight and frustration to me. Reh who has his heart on his sleeve I realised, is very much not Daniel Goleman's star kid.

Nosh you continuously remind me of my childhood. While I lived on the fringes of a gang that consisted of girlfriends with varying levels of their idea of friendship, there was one who was always nice to me but bcos she was very popular with everyone else, it caused a lot of friction between the others and me who always tried to sour things between us. She was older, already into things that others caught up with months and years later. The fact that we lived close to each other and shared a bus made our friendship a little bit stronger. She was smart enough to have me AND the others on good terms with her. I never understood why she didnt just give them the boot. (as you can see fate probably led me into trying to understand PR but it still hasnt sunk in.) Me though, I couldnt understand jealousy and possessiveness and everything else that goes into girlfriends' relationships and practically cried everyday bcos of the resulting confusion.

I know Nosh has her own issues with her friends, but what I respect about her is she sticks to her guns and has tried to create her own support system, (primarily me) which she uses to keep her going. Its not all about doing anything to fit in. Her life doesnt revolve so much around her friends that she dissolves at the thought of cancelled playdates or friends choosing other people to play with. I remember the world used to crumble around me if I couldnt join my friends for a party or wasnt allowed to spend time with them. In school though, I see she's well-liked and well-adjusted. Nosh is very content to be home with us. She has her moments of sadness with school and friends but on the whole holds up allright! She says her best friends are her teacher and me. I think that says a lot for her.

Her confidence and this set-up here that allows one teacher to teach most subjects and thereby she's practically a surrogate mom since she's spending almost six hours with her students!
Back when I was a kid, I lived an hours bus ride away from school, home life and school life were two separate compartments and my parents werent that big a part of the school system as I would have liked.
This way though, the kids here have a feeling that their parents are right behind them I think and its a wonderful feeling.

While Reh is loud and momentary about his feelings, whats the word? He doesnt think of understanding people in the long-term. Making a picture about their personality. Trying to figure out what makes them tick or who they are. Its like he lives in his head and is busy trying to understand his dinosaurs and cars really.

Nosh though, gets to the nitty-gritty of it and I love this about her - will not let someone else's meanness or rudeness get to her. Unless its coming from someone she adores and then she's puzzled and retreats. Me on the other hand - I'd better not go there. I still have grudges from 20 years ago. LOL!!!!

I was having this conversation with the other moms during a classmates birthday party and it was such a DUH moment for me when someone with three daughters said girls are just more emotional. Of course! Why didnt I figure that out sooner?!! Esp since I am a right brained eejit myself. Thats why as Nosh's been growing last year, suddenly some things arent so simple anymore. While a kiss and a hug set Reh on his way, Nosh needs more time and words and ears.

How could I forget those years when I understood things, felt things but couldnt name the feelings, couldnt handle them and then the world didnt seem as easy to navigate? I know I understood and observed a lot of things as a child that were not expected of a child of my age. Or people have been going through the same things forever but you just forget as you get older.
You still behaved like a child but you knew so much more. All during those times, I remember a vague feeling of dread too. I didnt know what would set me free, I didnt want to carry the burden of all this knowledge that I couldnt even process for the most part but still carried with me. Y'know that thing about children understanding whats going on. They know. They just know. It might be a vague or strong feeling but it still has us by the forelock.
Maybe if I'd felt there was a safe place for me to turn to.
I think if I do nothing else right, I'll die happy knowing I was that safe place for my children.
Its not easy. Being kind.

Rocking on....!

Last night just before the trillionth time asking them to get into bed, as usual Reh was tinkering with his boom box and decides for the trillionth time (ayiayiayi) that he'd listen to Rock On. Looked like it was fun dancing in their pj's so I decided to capture it forever. I'm waiting for the day they see it and cringe. LOL!

Reh I noticed was not his usual self - a bit too quiet for his usual demeanour. Maybe it was the time, maybe it was bcos he was not alone like he normally is in his room while doing his thing. He's normally more animated!

Nosh will do anything to get out of early turning in. Here she's in her element!

Infinitely exciting

Hey Mom! listen to this!

You tell her . No! You tell her!

So ermm...yada, blabbidy blada...

Errrr....I dont. think. she got it.

I regularly hear nosh n reh giggling or chuckling together or by themselves downstairs. Initially I used to go downstairs to see what they were upto and used to be surprised to see they were laughing at some joke on TV. Must be some silly joke on their kiddie programmes I used to think.
Now though, it's exciting to me to see them laughing at jokes and punchlines. For me its just the same as them learning to walk or talk....their sense of humour is a delight to experience! Funny thing is how different even their sense of humour is from each other. Reh's is very slapstick, funny noises, funny moves kind of stuff that sends him roaring. Nosh - its witty one-liners and irritating one-ups. Having the last say kind of thing.
Whatver it is though, it cracks me up - watching them following a program and laughing where they should and sometimes where I'm surprised they did! They got that? I wonder...they really understood the joke behind that? wow. It's like seeing your kids come of age to a certain extent...holding a conversation, keeping it going, adding jokes and inventing banter on car-rides....it's really delightful to me. Long were those days when you looked in the rearview mirror and made inhuman noises to get a reaction from the kids in the backseat who looked equally surprised at this mime. Now, it's high energy conversations and of course - fighting for who spots the most Mercs (hey!! why are you looking at the ones outside MY window?) who spots Nandeenie's (Nandini) (say nan like a gora would say nan as in tandoori naan) house first even though poor Nandini probably gets a spate of horrible hiccups everyday since we're always passing by her house, who gets to pick which song to play etc and then there are those days when conversation flows smoothly. CONVERSATION! I will never get used to it or become less grateful for it.
I used to Hate those days - the first 15-16 months before the kids start talking. My God were they long. I'm not a talker so its nice when they babble and I can listen or referee. Bliss!

sigh

Can you believe this kid was bawling, snotty and hysterical 2 mins before he conked out? He got off the bus very happy and upbeat. Then his sister spoilt his surprise of what he'd made for me in school by telling me. Then she discovered the chocolate bar I'd bought as a surprise for them and he insisted on getting the whole bar. Of course thats a no can do. From then it was downhill. So I let out a war cry myself and cornered him into his room, tucked him into bed still with the sirens of his wailing in full steam and by the time I threatened to get a lakdi and be right back, he was just short of snoring.
Letter to Reh -
I totally understand my sweet son. Sometimes going out into the world and facing it in it's confusion can be frustrating for all of us adults too. So for a little soul like you I can't imagine everything you go through and struggle to make sense of. I so get that losing control over even the littlest things you cant control and almost everything being beyond your control can be maddening and really enough to make you sad. Thats why I never want to go back to being a child or teenager for that matter. All I can say is that I think you're a brave chap and I pray nothing breaks your spirit ever. EVER.
Lots of woodpeckery kisses,
Mom.

Nosh wanted to show you what she got at the show yesterday. Diego spinning inside that whirligig thing. It's cute Noshi-ma. I'm so glad we spent that time in the city yesterday. The high of it kept you awake long after I'd slept. For once it didnt bug me. Just made me smile. I love you.

Raindrops fallin on our heads...

It's a gorgeous night here in NY. Hint of spring with all the beautiful, melting, rejuvenating rain. One where you can be thrilled to bits sharing your umbrella with the love of your life, skipping thru puddles. Since the love of my life is filling tax forms, the other two loves of my life and I opened the windows and smelled, felt, heard and saw the rain. If there was no roof, we could have tasted it too but another time. Nosh and Reh got all excited at hearing their voices echo and mumma hushing them up while they marvelled loudly at the beautiful lights and the rain drops outlined in the street light. Anyone passing by (actually there were a smattering of cars whooshing by) would have heard cold-gusts-of-air-induced giggly belly laughs. (Wish I could bottle up those laughs forever.) They were even more excited that I opened the windows AND let them poke their heads out.

Soon those trees are gonna be lush and we wont be able to see the windows on the other side.

Nat: yesterday as usual he was doing his tribal dance numbers as is wont
Nat: not just a dance - it's a way of life for him - like yoga for normal people
Nat: in the middle id been asking him to clean up and sundry other things
nad: ok
Nat: and he was going on with his smartass answers and trying to wriggle out of every thing I ask him to do...
Nat: nosh says with her as usual miss cool and god im so above this attitude -
Nat: "Reh....
Nat: ....you're so 'en'tertaining", legs folded under her, resting on her arm like she was picnicing on the Riviera, expression on her face like she just said checkmate.
Nat: quote unquote
I just guffawed.
nad: lol
nad: poor u
Nat: she has a hundred one liners like this
Nat: but u have to catch it from under her breath
Nat: poor me??

Another Nosh-liner that cracked me up:

The phone was ringing and I couldnt find it and it kept ringing and nosh goes - "Pick up the phone! It's out of control!"

Prayer for Nosh n Reh

I came upon this wonderful piece, a prayer Douglas MacArthur wrote for his son. He could'nt have said it better.

...................................................................

Build me a son, O Lord, who will be strong enough to know when he is weak and brave enough to face himself when he is afraid; one who will be proud and unbending in honest defeat, and humble and gentle in victory.

Build me a son whose wishes will not take the place of deeds; a son who will know Thee-and that to know himself is the foundation stone of knowledge.

Lead him I pray, not in the path of ease and comfort, but under the stress and spur of difficulties and challenge. Here let him learn to stand up in the storm; here let him learn compassion for those who fail.

Build me a son whose heart will be clear, whose goal will be high, a son who will master himself before he seeks to master other men; one who will reach into the future, yet never forget the past.

And after all these things are his, add, I pray, enough of a sense of humour, so that he may always be serious, yet never take himself too seriously. Give him humility,so that he may always remember the simplicity of true greatness, the open mind of true wisdom, and the weakness of true strength.

Then I, his father will dare to whisper, "I have not lived in vain".

So Different

They're so different from each other, it still hasnt settled in my head. I keep thinking maybe its a phase Reh is going through, maybe I just didnt see this side of Nosh blah blah but you know what - it's not anything else, it's just that they are as different as the sun and the moon.

Nosh loves healthy food, Reh will run a mile and even give me incredulous looks like - "You're actually going to give me that?" in the hopes that I'll 'eat' it??

Nosh was potty trained and off the bottle before she started nursery at 3 and Reh still goes off to school leaving me twisting my hands thinking which poor teacher will have to change his diaper today Oh God!?

It was important to her to be as grown-up as she could but Reh shrugs off the whole big boy carrot unless he's asking for the car keys...

Reh has no problem getting dirty. His hands are exploring everything goopy and he cant understand WHY he has to change clothes. Nosh though gets a horrified, alarmed look on her face if she inhales anythign smelling putrid, offensive or unpleasant... and she changes clothes as per stain or water drops!

Reh's all dynamite energy and Nosh is like a swiftly flowing but calm river. It does'nt take much to calm her down on those overwhelming, tired, cranky days except a hot bubble bath and snuggling with a book. Or even a hug. Reh demands a complete FIR report written and will not be soothed until it's a distant memory...

I dont have many memories of reading to Reh and actually finishing a whole book before he's up and away....and Nosh knows all the pages in her books and whats coming next.

Reh notices the smallest changes in you like earrings, letting your hair down or having it up - what looks good on you and what colour your eyes are. (never fails to surprise/delight me)

Nosh will notice but not necessarily comment.

Reh's a morning person - he's out like a light when he hits his bed at night. Wakes up to the sound of his dad's voice. (which is usually a phone call from Europe and R being R - all phone calls are of the old Indian trunk-call variety) Nosh is a night person....nothing can make her go to sleep unless its close to 11:30pm unless she's had a really active day. Waking her up in the morning is akin to waking up a hibernating bear.

She was forever kicking and somersaulting in-utero. Reh kicked when I had cough medicine or had a book propped up on my tummy. I had to poke and prod him to gimme a little shimmy.

Reh's big on pretend games - where he's the Dadda and Nosh is happiest when solving puzzles or colouring or reading or painting.

Reh loved potttering about with me in the kitchen. Nosh loved watching the action from my hip- her vantage point.

Reh took more than 6 months to get used to going to nursery. Nosh sailed into the bus and away -didnt even look back.

Reh's loud. Nosh tries. The shrieking effect unnerves me.

Nosh loves Reh so much. Reh's getting there.

Then again maybe he doesnt show it the same way Nosh does.

Reh isn't afraid of falling, getting hurt. Nosh will scream even if someone else falls.

Nosh is a roti person. Reh is a khaana person. Carb addict in the making.

I guess why all this amazes me is when I thought I knew Nosh and what made her tick and things were smooth, Reh with his different persona, brought on new exercises for my muscles. I'm not just talking about my biceps. Since he's more demanding and near inconsistent, everyday is an eye-opener. Maybe he's making up for the terrible twos and threes that Nosh didn't go through.

Maybe it's a boy thing.

Some days I think maybe it's bcos I didnt lug him around on my hip as much as I did Nosh. Maybe I wasn't tuning enough into him while he was inside me like I did with Nosh. Bcos I knew Nosh inside out and Reh - I can't decipher him. Maybe he marches to a different drummer, I don't know. Or maybe I'm reading too much - he's just being a boy.

Between the both of them though I got what R wanted - one girl and one boy LOL!
